Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I measure for my new drapes?
Please refer to our Drapery Sizing & Measurement Guide for step-by-step instructions on how to measure for your curtains based on your choice of heading style.
Do your curtains come with necessary hardware?
Afraid not; we do not sell or include any hardware with our drapery.
What lining options do you offer?
We offer two lining options: privacy & blackout.
The standard white privacy lining prevents sun glare and protects the face fabric from sun damage and colour fading.
The blackout lining is a specially treated fabric that is able to block light and darken a room to a considerable degree. It also offers additional benefits such as sound blocking and thermal insulation.
Our blackout linings come in three colours - white, beige and grey - offering clients plenty of bandwidth to appease any decor style, especially if the rear side of the window treatment will be visible to an adjoining room or an outdoor living area.
Please note linings are sewn behind the curtains, and not provided as separate, removable liners.
To learn more about drapery lining options available at The White Window, please read our blog post HERE.
What does the term ‘heading style’ mean?
‘Heading style’ refers to the design and construction of the top header of a curtain, which determines how a curtain forms its pleats. From relaxed flat panels to tailored goblet pleats, the heading style choice not only influences the overall appearance but also impacts the operational ease of the drapery.
Understanding heading styles is key to achieving the desired look and functionality for your curtains, so please do browse our detailed Drapery Heading Style Guide when you’re shopping for your made-to-measure curtains from The White Window.
Which curtain heading styles do you offer?
We offer more than a dozen heading style options including - flat panels, grommet/ eyelet tops, pencil pleats, rod pockets (with/ without header frill), tab tops, back tabs, and pencil pleats, and six different types of pinch pleat headers.
To learn more about all the heading styles on offer, and pick one suitable for your space, please refer to our detailed Drapery Headings Style Guide.
How much space should I expect my curtain panels to take when stacked open to the sides?
The width of curtain panels when stacked to the sides depends on various factors, making it challenging to provide a precise measurement.
However, as a general guideline, casual styles such as grommet tops, rod pockets, flat panel curtains, etc. typically stack at approximately 20% of their total width, while pinch pleat curtains may stack at around 25%.
For instance, let's consider a grommet top curtain panel with a width of 250cm. When gathered and stacked to the side, this panel can be expected to occupy approximately 50cm of pole space. On the other hand, a pinch pleat curtain of the same width would have a slightly wider stack of around 65cm.
Please bear in mind that these are estimated figures. Drapery stackback is influenced by several other factors such as the thickness of the fabric, lining, and how tightly the panels are gathered by the user.
Will there be any seams/ joins in my drapes if I order them in extra-long and extra-wide sizes?
Most standard fabric bolts come in continuous lengths but a fixed width of 137cm.
Therefore, extra long curtains will not have any joins to achieve longer lengths.
However, if you order extra-wide panels, you can expect them to have vertical joins to achieve the desired widths.
Pinch pleat drapes wider than 50cm or non-pinch pleats above 120cm will require vertical seams where two (or more) fabric bolts will be sewn together to form extra wide curtain panels.
These seams are a standard industry practice, and unavoidable in the construction of wide panels. But, you can rest assured that a well-executed seam - sewn by experienced tailors - is discreet and almost invisible.
In the case of patterned and printed fabrics, our tailors match the motifs seamlessly along the joins with careful attention to detail. As a result, the joins become nearly imperceptible within the pleats, only noticeable when examining the curtains up close.

How wide are the bottom hems of your drapes?
Our curtains are sewn with 5 cm wide bottom hems. If you’d like the hem to be wider or narrower, simply write to us at info@thewhitewindowcurtains.co.uk before placing your order, and we’ll be happy to accommodate any custom specifications.
What grommet sizes and finishes do you offer for your eyelet curtains?
We offer four grommet finishes/ colours - silver, bronze, brass (gold) and black - in sizes below:
- Standard-size grommets (4cm inner diameter): Available in silver, bronze, brass and black
- Large-size grommets (5cm inner diameter): Available in silver and bronze
- Small-size grommets (2.5cm inner diameter): Available in silver only
What is the width of the header tape sewn at the back of your curtains?
Our pinch pleat, pencil pleat and flat panel curtains come with a 10cm wide header tape sewn at the back. The tape features three different ‘levels’ to allow clients to insert drapery pins at various positions, thereby offering flexibility to decide the exact position where the curtains ‘sit’ near the pole.

How many drapery pins will I need to hang my pinch pleat curtains?
Pleats on our pinch pleat drapes are stitched at an interval of approximately 7.5 - 10cm. We advise clients to use a drapery pin behind each pleat to provide maximum support to the drapes and prevent sagging between pleats.
Number of drapery pins can be estimated based on the pleat noted gap above and the width of the panel.
We recommend ordering a few extra pins to account for any unforeseen adjustments and to have spares on hand for future use.
How many drapery pins will I need to hang my flat panel curtains?
The number of pins required to mount flat panel curtains can vary depending on how you’d like your curtains to look and how flat or rounded you want your pleats to be.
If you prefer your flat panel curtains to have deep pleats, we suggest inserting the pins around 17-20cm apart. On the other hand, for a relatively flatter look but with more pleats, insert your pins closer together at approximately 10-15cm intervals.
Remember as a rule of thumb that pins placed at shorter intervals will give you a flatter look (with more pleats) while pins placed at greater intervals will produce deeper rounder (but fewer) pleats. Therefore, calculate the number of pins required based on how far apart you want to place your pins and the width of the panel.
For further guidance and detailed information, refer to our blog post on Flat Panel Curtains & Window Drapes.
What is the width of the pockets in your rod pocket panels?
Our standard pocket size for rod pocket curtains is 6.5cm.
Should you need an adjustment to accommodate an extra-skinny or chunky drapery pole, please reach out to us at info@thewhitewindowcurtains.co.uk before placing your order, and we are happy to accommodate any custom requests.
Do you stitch curtains with rod pockets on both the top and bottom ends of panels for sidelight windows?
Yes, we do - and at no extra charge.
To place your order, please purchase your drapes on our site with rod pockets (with or without header frill) and send us an email alongside requesting double pockets on your panels. Please do not forget to include your order number in the email. And that’s it; our tailors will pick it up from there.
How can I stop my new curtains from flaring at the bottom and make the pleats fall in straight, neat folds?
New curtains rarely ever form perfect neat folds out of the box. Drapery panels require time and ‘training’ to develop ‘pleat memory’.
Learn how to train your curtains with our detailed Drapery Training Guide with handy reference images and insider tips from our stylists.
Your pinch-pleat curtains cost almost twice as much as non-pinch styles in the exact same panel width. Why?
While the cost difference between pinch pleat drapes and non-pinch pleat styles like grommet tops or flat panel tops may appear to be almost double, it's not really the case. This is best explained with an example.
Consider a window that is 100cm wide.
Opting for a grommet top (or any non-pinch pleat style), clients would ideally order two panels of 100cm each for 2x fullness, to ensure that the panels have enough width to gather into dense pleats.
In contrast, when choosing a pinch pleat style, clients would ideally order two panels of about 60cm each for the exact same window. This is because pleats are pre-sewn into the headers of pinch pleat drapes.
In summary, the same window of 100cm can be dressed with either two grommet top panels of width 100cm each, or two pinch pleats panels of width 60cm each, thereby equalising the price of the two options to a large degree.
Do you accept clients’ own material (COM) to be sewn into drapery?
Afraid not; we only work with fabrics from our own collection.
