Double-Sided Curtains: Tips to Double Elegance & Function

One curtain, two temperaments—like a well-layered English interior! Double-sided curtains feature two show-worthy sides, assuring they look as lovely from the street as from the fireside. Use them as room-dividers or dressings for a glass door, and you’ll have both sides of the room feeling particularly favored. Hang them as bed canopies, and they’ll cocoon you with a special warmth, the kind only layered curtains can lend. Let them dress open doorways, and they’ll make both the welcome and goodbye feel equally special.

Double-sided curtains are the overachievers of the drapery world that step up when the design mandate gets unusually challenging —to dress up a room from both the front and the rear. Where regular curtains show the lining or the face fabric’s reverse side, double-sided custom curtains show a drapery fabric on the back as well as the front. Hence, the unparalleled design potential, but not without some foreseeable challenges and caveats. Let’s take a quick look at these.

Double-Sided Reversible Curtains: Caveats to Consider

A double-sided curtain is called so because it is presentable on both sides, unlike a regular curtain that only looks finished on the front. But be aware that ‘double-sided’ does not mean that both sides are absolutely identical.

On the back, double-sided drapery will still carry some visible hemlines and - depending on the chosen heading style - heading tape and header accessories as well – all telltale signs of being the reverse side.

Further, since double-sided curtains are made of two layers of drapery fabrics instead of one, they are heavier than standard, single-sided curtains. That’s why oversized reversible curtains tend to be a bit slower to glide on the pole/track, which brings its own set of styling considerations, such as:

FABRIC: Curtains glide smoothly if their weight is not pulling them down, compromising their agility. Oversized reversible curtains may not whoosh open in an instant because of their excessive weight. To keep the weight in check, we recommend opting for low to medium-weight fabrics for at least one side.

HARDWARE: Heavy drapes must be complemented with sturdy hardware so that they last long and don’t turn rickety over time. So, ensure that the load-bearing capacity of the pole/track matches the requirement of double-sided curtains.

HEADING STYLE: The design and construction of the header or the top portion of the drapery impacts how the curtains hang, glide and gather. Hence, when choosing the heading style for double-sided curtains, there are special considerations to be made. On the aesthetic front, the header’s construct should be such that the drapery looks pleasant on both sides. On the functional side, it has to ensure a smooth glide, especially because the drapery’s excessive weight can potentially slow its pace.

Evidently, two-faced beauty has its own challenges. But the good news is that styling ninjas are never short of clever solutions. Ahead, we share practical tips to make the most of your double-sided curtains, both aesthetically and functionally:

Choose a Compatible Heading Style

As mentioned above, the heading style for double-sided curtains has to be chosen with care because their aesthetic and functional requirements are high. So, evaluate every heading style on how it fares in its compatibility with reversible curtains before you make your choice. To help you along, we share our insights on each heading style’s suitability for double-sided curtains:

  • Pinch Pleats: The most favored in classical English homes, the pinch pleats have a stunning front with their pre-sewn pleats. However, on the back, they show their heading tape, hooked-in drapery pins, rings, and an irregular flow of fabric due to the folding in of the pleats. For these reasons, the pinch pleat styles are the least favoured when it comes to reversible drapes.
  • Tab Tops, Back Tab Tops, Tie Tops & Rod Pocket Tops: These heading styles feature fabric pockets or tabs that go over the pole. Their gather of fabric and overall look is ‘similar’ on the front and the back, making them aesthetically ideal for double-sided curtains. However, we recommend these styles only for small-size and lightweight panels as large, heavy curtains sewn in these styles don’t glide as smoothly on the pole as styles with rings or grommets.
  • Flat Panel Tops & Eyelet Tops: The headers of curtains in these heading styles are very simple and sleek, and they look strikingly similar on both sides. Further, they operate on rings/grommets, so they promise a smooth glide. Hence, these styles are our top recommendations for double-sided drapes. Note that they do give away the back side, even though discreetly. Flat panel tops show their heading tapes and the eyelets of grommet tops show their reverse side.

Ensure a Smooth Glide

Since double-sided curtains are made up of two layers of drapery fabrics, they are understandably heavier than standard window drapes. And that can cause oversized curtains to be slow to glide on the pole. But, there’s no practical drapery problem that does not have a styling solution. To ensure that your double-sided curtains sail smoothly along the pole, give special attention to the following aspects:

  • Fabric’s Weight: Keep to low or medium-weight fabrics at least for one side. This will help to keep the drapery’s overall weight in check.

  • Number of Panels: Where the curtains have to cover a wide span, opt for multiple panels instead of one sweeping curtain panel, so the weight gets distributed, making it easier to operate each panel.

  • Heading Style: Choose headers that operate on hardware accessories like rings or pins, so the movement is eased even if the curtains are heavy.

And that’s how you welcome style without compromising function, when dressing your home with reversible curtains!

Craft Both Looks with Care

Double-sided curtains speak the same language as layered English interiors—cosy, sumptuous and detailed. Whether you’re obsessed with country cottage homeliness, Bloomsbury-inspired eclecticism or Victorian-style maximalism, here’s your chance to vent it unapologetically. Because you have not one but two canvases to style with color and pattern. Here we share our favourite ways of maximising the aesthetic potential of double-sided curtains:

CHOOSE SAME FABRIC: Sewing both sides of the drapery with the same fabric lends a polished look. Here, the drapery will look almost identical on both sides, ensuring a cohesive visual flow from one side of the room to the other.

MIX TWO PLAINS: Style both sides of the drapery with different colored plain fabrics, creating a different mood on each side. You can mix two neutral tones or complementary hues, or pair a bold color with a neutral—choose the vibe you’re going for on each side of the room, and pick the color accordingly.

PAIR A PATTERN & A PLAIN: Choose a patterned and a plain fabric that share the same color story. They sport two very different looks and yet don’t feel disjointed because of their cohesive palette.

MIX TWO PATTERNS: Take a maximalist approach and pick two different patterned fabrics, making both sides of the drapery lively. For a visual balance, try to offset a bold pattern on one side with a quieter one on the other, and keep the palette lean and coordinated.

Bonus Tip: Another detail where you can introduce nuance is in the texture. Although subtle, incorporating diverse textures into the decor does make a noticeable difference. Say, for instance, pair a velvet and a linen of the same color — one brings the opulence of plush naps, the other offers the lived-in charm of a slubbed weave.
